The Kingsman: The Golden Circle

First Hit:  Terrible story with few bright spots.

What a waste of talent. How do Julianne Moore (Poppy), Taron Egerton (Eggsy), Colin Firth (Harry Hart – whose character died in previous film), Channing Tatum (Tequila), Halle Berry (Ginger), Jeff Bridges (Champ) and Elton John (as himself) all sign up for a story that has disaster written all over it? I don’t know. Maybe the Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn script read better than it worked out to be. Maybe it was Vaughn’s issue because he couldn't deliver what he envisioned in his mind.

I just don’t know, how this happened. Besides a couple reasonable fight scenes and a couple slightly amusing tongue-in-cheek scenes, the premise that Poppy was going to blackmail the President of the United States so that she could freely sell her drugs all over the world, was preposterous.

Maybe the film needed to be WAY over the top in the tongue-in-cheek category to work.

Hart died in the previous film, and to make-up a story that he miraculously survived the shooting by some someone using a FEDEX  or UPS looking plastic bubble wrap around his head and followed by an emotional shock to make him be the same person as before is ludicrous.

Anyway, the Kingsman, who have a limited crew, with Merlin (Mark Strong), Eggsy and the partially defective Hart, are trying to find and destroy Charlie (Edward Holcroft) who makes an attempt to kill Eggsy. Charlie blows-up the country mansion and the tailor shop in London and now want Eggsy. Charlie being a shunned former Kingsman, unbeknownst to Eggsy, is really working for Poppy. Poppy is running her drug trade in a lost city in a jungle. She’s turned it into a 1950’s style base of operations. Really? This is the setup. Really, I kid you not.

Then the writers add this: For help, The Kingsman team up with the Statesman, which is run by Champ. The Statesman is the US version of the Kingsman; an independent spy security agency. It is run out of a distillery, hence the names of their agents, Tequila and Whiskey (Pedro Pascal). Now this is exciting! But wait, there's more...

Not only does Poppy build robotic dogs to protect herself, she likes being entertained, so she has hired Elton John to play songs for her in an empty theater anytime she likes. Elton does have a couple other key momentary appearances, but he’s not an actor and it shows.

Egerton is, at times, fun to watch but the script is so disjointed and unfounded that it lets him and the role down. Moore’s role is hopeless. She attempts to be part tongue-in-cheek and part serious, but because the role is ill defined in an ill-defined movie, it falls flat. Firth seems so out of place in this role it just made me cringe. He needed to stay dead. Strong was one bright spot in the film and his centered acting made his role work. Berry was driven to be so much less than what she is by the role. She's made to be a girl Friday and I disliked her scenes completely. Bridges' role was insipid. That he chose to act in this film is disheartening. Holcroft was good as the maniac bionic armed villain. He made it work. Pascal didn’t fit in this film at all. He seemed out of place and it was clear from the beginning, he wasn’t on the side he said he was on. Tatum was fun at times and it seemed as though he was used in this film as eye candy for a female audience. He added little to the story. John can stay away from acting, even as himself. Goldman and Vaughn script was a mess from the beginning to the end. Vaughn had no vision as a director to deliver a story that would engage the audience. The film was thrown at the audience.

Overall:  Don’t waste your time for this insipid film.

Kidnap

First Hit:  This movie was well paced and kept me fully engaged.

I was somewhat skeptical walking into this film because I knew nothing about it. I quickly got up to speed because it doesn't waste much time jumping into the story. In just a few words it is about what a mother, Karla (Halle Berry), will do to locate and take back her kidnapped son Frankie (Sage Correa).

Karla is divorcing and her, soon to be, ex-husband sends her a legal notice stating he wants primary custody of their son mostly because he’s financially well-off and can give their boy the very best. Deeply hurt, Karla takes Frankie to a park to enjoy the day together. Getting a phone call, she steps away from her son to better hear the caller.

When she turns back towards her son, he is gone. Frantically searching the nearby area and parking lot, she sees Frankie being pulled and pushed into a car. She  screams and starts running towards the kidnapper's car. Along the way she drops her mobile phone which puts her at a disadvantage because she cannot call the police. Getting into her van, she begins to chase after the kidnapper's car.

Here is where the film gets intense. The car chase scene, which takes up about half the film, is intense, filled with suspense and makes you question, what would you do. There is no question about what Karla is going to do and as an audience member, I suggest that you sit back and enjoy the ride.

The film editing is wonderful. The choreography of the automobiles on the highways is engaging and clearly well thought-out.

Berry is really strong in this film. I fully bought her character and it is clear she's capable of carrying this entire film. She does this extremely well. Correa is good in his small role. Chris McGinn (as Margo) is sufficiently mean and perfect as the in-charge kidnapper. Lew Temple is good as Terry, the subservient kidnapper to Margo. Knate Lee wrote a strong action script. Luis Prieto did a wonderful job of making excitement last throughout this film.

Overall:  This film may not get the audience it deserves but the people who see it will be very entertained.

The Call

First Hit:  A very taut thriller that captured the intenseness of being a 911 operator.

Keeping one’s emotional detachment in place when someone else’s world is falling apart is a talent, especially when they are relying on you to save them. 

That is the life of a 911 phone specialist. Keeping their composure while guiding someone through a tough situation would be difficult. 911 personal also get people who call them for ridiculous things like lost keys. This film focuses on Jordan (Halle Berry) who gets a call from a young girl named Leah who is home alone and someone is breaking into her house, she calls 911 and gets Jordan.

As the perpetrator finds Leah, he grabs the phone from Leah and tells Jordan in response to her statement “please don’t hurt her”, “it’s already done". The girl isn’t found until they uncover her buried and dead. The whole experience affects Jordan more than she wanted and changes jobs from being on the phone to teaching others about how to be on the phone.

While taking a group through the call center, a novice gets a call from a young girl, Casey (Abigail Breslin) who is being abducted. The novice hands the phone to the more senior Jordon and the real thriller begins. The scenes of Jordan and her call center mates were very well done because of the job they share, the scenes came across deeply touching given what they share.

Berry was very strong and exhibited great angst and intensity as her part unfolded. Breslin was very good as the captured girl who wanted, in the end, to stay alive. Michael Eklund (as Michael Foster) was perfectly and weirdly intense as the kidnapper. The scene of him waiting at the stop light for the signal to change was amazing. The audience sees his mouth and jaw clicking and clenching, making small noises, - perfect. Richard D’Ovidio wrote a very intense and strong script while Brad Anderson’s direction kept it taut.

Overall: Well done.

Cloud Atlas

First Hit:  A difficult concept to make believable in film but here it works fairly well and is interesting.

The concept that the energy/spirit of who we are never ceases to exist and manifests itself in bodies is not new.

His Holiness Dalai Lama has revisited us 14 times. If you watch the Martin Scorsese film “Kundun” (HHDL’s nickname) you will see an enactment of his discovery of who he is and was. Anyway, Cloud Atlas takes us through people and their connections through many different expressions of their lifetimes.

Tom Hanks plays multiple versions of a good guy as does Halle Berry his connected partner. This very long (almost three hours) film goes by surprisingly fast because there are 6 story lines the audience has to follow.

The credit for this film being engaging and interesting is to the fine direction under Tom Tykwer with Lana and Andy Wachowski. I found myself wanting to know more (and read this also as caring more) about some story lines versus others. T

here were storylines I wanted to dismiss quickly while others I had more interest in. Without tipping my hand too much, the future stories were more interesting to me as were 2 of the historical stories. At times the scenes and sets were amazing in their ethereal beauty while others were sharp in their rough starkness.

Without me having to go back (and I won’t) watch it again, what struck the following day was; did anyone learn enough in their previous versions of themselves to go from being a bad guy to a good guy? Was there redemption? I don’t think so. This thought took me to thinking how much better this film might have been if an energy/spirit learned from their past behavior and moved to a different based energy. But then again it would have been a whole other film.

At one point the film did strike a chord in me which I think is true: “Love is real. Everything else is an illusion. Live in this realm and you will be at peace.”

I wondered how hard it was for the actors to stay in character for all the roles each had to play – and therefore kudos to all. Hanks was very good but typical of himself in his roles as Dr. Henry Goose, and 5 others. Halle Berry was strong in her 6 roles. Jim Broadbent was really fun to watch in his 5 roles. Hugo Weaving had 6 really disparate but interesting roles as the bad guy. Jim Sturgess was the young hero in 7 roles and did this well but I didn’t think the Asian makeup worked well. Doona Bae was mesmerizing as Sonmi-451 (interesting reference to another famous 451) and her scenes stole much of the film. Lana and Andy Wachowski along with Tom Tykwer wrote an interesting screenplay from David Mitchell’s book Cloud Atlas (named for a symphony). They also did an outstanding job of keeping this long film moving and engaging the audience.

Overall:  Interesting, far reaching, and well done but not great.
