Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

First Hit:  Although uneven in its execution, I liked the resulting story as a whole.

WTF has an appeal in a couple of ways. The title was interesting because it is what Kim Baker (Tina Fey) felt about her life. She was in an uninspired relationship with her boyfriend, her news reporting job is as tenuous as it is monotonous and she realized that she was sleepwalking through life. She’s given a chance to go to Afghanistan to report on a fading war.

The news focus is on Iraq and the US has troops in Afghanistan and her network wants someone there to get and report on the best news nuggets available. Kim decides to take the leap and almost immediately she regrets the choice. However, as you’d expect, she finds her sea legs and starts to dig for stories and eventually lands an excellent one by being embedded in one of General Hollanek’s (Billy Bob Thornton) units.

Unfortunately, we see Kim fall into the partying ways of her peers with no understanding as to why. Her friendship with Tanya Vanderpoel (Margot Robbie), one of the few other women in compound, seemed shallow.

The script attempted to make these two be good friends, but there was something palpable missing. Labeled as a "Comedy", there was very little that is funny about this film which added to the unevenness.

The notable components for me were:  The outstanding performance of Christopher Abbott as Fahim Ahmadzai, who was Baker’s interpreter. He really embodied a sweetness and intelligence of the culture and his performance stayed with me long after the credits. When Kim spoke with a group of Afghani village women only to find out that they were destroying the wells was another really good scene. However, there seemed little depth to Baker and this did drag the film down and made for some scenes that could have been cut.

The ending scenes, however, brought the film back together. Her meeting with Specialist Coughlin (Evan Jonigkeit) at his ranch was very heartfelt as was her bringing Iain MacKelpie (Martin Freeman), a lover from Afghanistan, on to her Washington news program.

Fey was uneven in her performance and I never really bought that she bought into the character. There seemed to be a slight disconnect at times. Other times her interpretation of the character worked well enough. Abbott was phenomenal, I so loved his character. His eyes said it all. Robbie was OK, but almost out of place based on her character and the situation. Freeman was strong as the guy who found a home in being a photographer in a war torn country. Thornton was perfect as the Marine General who was a sarcastic, tough, and compassionate leader. Jonigkeit was excellent as the Marine who suffered and grew from the experience. Alfred Molina as Ali Massoud Sadiq was another bright spot in the film. Robert Carlock and Kim Barker wrote the screenplay based on Barker’s account of being in Afghanistan. Glenn Ficarra and John Requa directed the film and as I’ve learned; when there is more than one director the chances of unevenness are more available and pronounced.

Overall:  Through the unevenness the ending and a few other great scenes made it work well enough.

Monkey Kingdom

First Hit:  A truly delightful amazing film.

Disney does and continues to produce the most amazing nature documentaries ever made. Here the Disney team moves the ball further down the field with “Monkey Kingdom”.

Just as in a novel, the Disney team takes their painstakingly shot footage and pieces together a story that is emotionally compelling, fun and interesting. The main character is Maya, a female that is at the bottom of this group’s hierarchical based society. When she gives birth to a young boy Kip, things change because of her perseverance and dedication to protecting and feeding her boy.

The scenes of Sri Lanka’s jungle were amazing as well.

Tina Fey narrated this film perfectly. Her inflections and curiosity were infectious. Mark Linfield and Alistair Fothergill did an amazing job of directing this effort.

Overall:  It may be a “G” rated film, and for me the “G” means great.

This Is Where I Leave You

First Hit:  Moments of brilliance with moments of negating over the top behavior.

The Altman  family gathers together because the father has died. Hillary (Jane Fonda) is the widow and her 4 children come to pay their respects to their father. She states that their father wanted the children to sit 7 days of Shiva. Reluctantly the children sit in chairs that are too low to the floor and begin the process of relating to each other again.

This could have been a more powerful story with comedy woven in, however the behavior of the adult children, especially youngest son Phillip (Adam Driver), turned me off to what could have been a more compelling story. Scenes where he turns up the baby monitor, in front of all the guests, to hear his brother and sister-in-law have sex at their father’s Shiva was tasteless.

Yes, it was supposed to be funny but it came off as insensitive. Then there were the physical fight scenes – where the brothers were in fisticuffs with each other over petty stuff – just seemed to be more than needed. However, there were also great touching scenes of both the comedic and sensitive nature.

Sister Wendy (Tina Fey) hitting her brother Judd’s (Jason Bateman) former boss Wade (Dax Shepard) because he slept with Judd’s wife was priceless. Just as was the scene of the brothers smoking the pot left in their father’s jacket while in a classroom at the Jewish temple – very funny, revealing and a true family and brotherly like moment.

Bateman was effective as the guy who has lived a very controlled precise predictable life and has had it turned upside down. His character change to someone that is willing to add a bit of complication in his life was very good. Fey was adorable as the sister among 3 very different brothers. She held her own both based on the role as well as her acting strength. Corey Stoll (as oldest brother Paul) was very good. He definitely had the older responsible, stay with the family business attitude down. Driver was good, but I didn’t like the script for him. It made him seem both dumb and ridiculous and he was really neither. Rose Byrne (Penny Moore) as Bateman’s old childhood friend was fantastic. I would have liked more of her in the film. Fonda was a hit. She really had me each time she was on the screen. I’ve loved her since the 1960’s (Cat Ballou – 1965 – where I first enjoyed her dramatic and comedic turns). Shepard was strong as the affected self-absorbed Disc Jockey. Jonathan Tropper wrote an occasionally strong and often misguided script. Shawn Levy didn’t seem to have a really clear direction as to what he wanted: Drama with great laughs or a comedy with some high-school like behavior out of adults while dealing with a serious subject.

Overall:  This film had glimpses and the possibility of being much better than it ended up being.

Addmissions

First Hit:  This film felt disjointed, lacking depth in character development, with moments of laughter. A good romantic comedy is a wonderful and fun to watch. It is also one of the easier genres to do poorly. Despite having Tina Fey and Paul Rudd, two funny people who can make a romantic comedy work – it doesn’t work here. Yes there are very funny parts but they are few and far between. The failure here is that this film also wants to be taken seriously as a drama as well. The result is a film looking for a base/home genre and therefore lost. When Portia (Fey), who is a Princeton Admissions Director, is with her partner (living together for 10 years) Mark (Michael Sheen), the scenes were not believable. There is no way I bought that they even liked each other – let alone lived together for 10 years. In fact this whole part of the story and script could have been scrapped and the film would have worked. The basic premise is that Portia likes stability and not getting close to anyone. Rudd as John Pressman (a director in an alternative school) pushes for not being stable; he travels with his adopted son and lives in countries all over the world. Both of these people are rebelling against their parents. Portia’s mom Susannah (played by Lily Tomlin) is a rebel of society and stable life – she wants to push the envelope. Mrs. Pressman (Lisa Emery) is old school conservative money and her son John wants to be free and always keep moving. This could be enough for a romantic comedy, but then add Portia may have a son she’s never known and that Rudd might have to settle down – we mix too much drama and it fizzles.

Fey is occasionally good, but mostly neither funny nor dramatically interesting. Rudd is better as he doesn’t have as many hurdles to jump to make his role work. Travis Bratten (as Rudd’s adoptive son Nelson) is excellent. Nat Wolff is very good as a smart lost young man who wants to become part of something. Tomlin is good as Fey’s troubled and inspirational mother. Sheen was wasted in this role that wasn’t needed to make this film work. Karen Croner wrote an inadequate screen play that didn’t know what it wanted to be. Paul Weitz directed this an probably knew it was failing as he filmed and edited it together.

Overall:  Not really worth the money but there are enough laughs to want to watch this for free on a Sunday evening.

Date Night

First Hit: This is a funny film and the actors work well together.

Tina Fey and Steve Carell work very well together. The energy between them and their relative sense of humor make them well matched as a couple in this unbelievable story of a "Date Night".

Phil (Carell) and Claire (Fey) Foster play a married couple that is very much into their family routines and roles. He works as a tax accountant and she a real estate agent and they have two children who like to wake their parents up early in the morning.

They have regularly scheduled date nights which lack excitement as the go to the same restaurant, eat the same food and return early for, maybe, some sex. Fearing they might be losing the fun aspect of their relationship, they decide to go to the city and have dinner at a hot new restaurant.

Without a reservation they are shoved off to the bar to wait for an open table by a sarcastic maître-de. When the “Tripplehorn’s” don’t show up for their reservation Phil decides to say “we’re the Tripplehorn’s" and get seated. Some gangster types usher them outside and before they know it, the Foster’s are caught up in a extortion ring.

Carell is good as the husband that feels a little controlled by his more than competent wife. Fey is very strong as Carell’s wife and has a way of creating wonderful humorous situations without making it look pressed. Her glances, reactions, and physical actions are in sync and gives her acting the appearance of being easy. Mark Wahlberg plays a studly, unshirted former client of Fey’s who assists the Fosters in their plight. His demeanor and smooth acting were perfect for the part. And an uncredited Ray Liotta as Joe Miletto the bad ass gangster is good. Shawn Levy is very good at bringing out the natural comedic flair of both Fey and Carell.

Overall: This was a funny film although the premise was unrealistic.
